“Christian Life Coaching is the art and practice of guiding a person from where they are toward the discovery of God’s vision for their life, and helping them learn to live accordingly. It is the collaborative process of determining direction and designing strategies to creatively move toward a passionately desired destination."

Is Life Coaching Biblical?

Life Coaching is most definitely Biblical. But, as a Life Coach, I would ask that you not simply accept my statement, but rather discern for yourself the truth in the answer. The Bible, God's Truth-confirms and describes the process we know as life coaching. To begin to answer the question, is Life Coaching Biblical, reflect upon the following Scriptures, reading them in your own Bible within the context of the paragraph or chapter in which they occur:

“The initial and essential prerequisite to understanding your personality, purpose, and place in the world is this: If your first concern is to look after yourself, you'll never find yourself! But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you'll find both yourself and me.”

- Jesus (Matthew 16:25, The Message)

“If you insist on saving your life, you will lose it. Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live!”

- Jesus (Mark 8:35, The Living Bible)

“Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”

- Jesus (Matthew 10:39, NIV)

“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.”- Jesus (Luke 9:24, NIV)

“Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.”

- Jesus (Luke 17:33, NIV)

What is Jesus emphasizing over and over again to his disciples, and whomever else he is encountering?? What implications for your own life come to mind?

The life coaching process can be summarized with the phrase:

Devotionally-Directed Discovery for Sacrificial Surrender & Service

There are many benefits you can anticipate as you commit yourself to discovering and moving forward on the journey that God has marked out for you. Christian life coaching can help you find:

• Meaning - you will understand how the God of the Bible loved you so much that he created and redeemed you to play an irreplaceable part in His eternal plan.

• Clarity - you will find clarity on specifics of who you are, why you exist, what your purposes are, how you want to live them out, and where you wish to do so.

• Passion - you will get in touch with the key issues and themes that motivate and move your heart within the Spirit inspired areas where you most long to make a difference.

• Priority - you will learn to sort through the competing demands and opportunities in your life, measuring their value according to the greater awareness of what he has called you to.

• Space - you will find that you can make room in terms of times, energy and resources - to be and do what God crafted you for. You won’t need to rush, hurry, worry, or feel pressured as you accomplish all the things God had given you to do.

• Freedom - you will find yourself able to move courageously into your world, intentionally acting upon that which you can control while flexibly releasing that which you cannot. You will give your best to that which is of greatest value to you, and trust Him for the results.

• Creativity - you will be free to express yourself in new ways and experiment with new things. You won’t be afraid to try and fail, instead you will play with life and learn, give, and grow in the adventure ahead.

• Productivity - you will have fewer failed resolutions and good intentions and far more realized goals and measurable achievement. You will see results from your invested resources of time, money, and energy.

• Accountability - you will have a guide and traveling partner who knows you, believes in you, and consistently considers how to ‘spur you on to love and good works’ as outlined in Hebrews 10:24 and will not let your vision die whatever the setbacks or obstacles.

• Joyful Rest - you will experience an increasingly undisturbed tranquility that replaces the emotional volatility of anger, worry, and depression born of a life dependent on external circumstances. You will become solid and stable, as the wonder of your life well–lived is built upon the Rock, Christ Jesus.

Christian life coaching is not the same as counseling. The focus of Christian life coaching is on movement toward a future vision rather than wrestling with issues from the past. A Christian life coach guides a journey through exploration and learning from the past, often reflecting on how what we have learned from the past is revealed in our present. This exploration reveals what is needed to move into the future in a spiritually-healthy manner. By exploring the past from a distance, a Christian life coach can guide you into the future God has designed for you.

Faith-oriented people who want to become fully-devoted followers of Jesus Christ make up the majority of a Christian life coach’s clientele. They comprise men or women from early adulthood on up from all walks of life including, professionals, stay-at-home moms, students, small business owners, church and parachurch leaders, executives, tradesmen, and many others.

Individuals who seek out Christian life coaching are ready to assume full responsibility for their lives and long to live them out of a comprehensive sense of passion and purpose. They are increasingly humble people who recognize their fears, doubts, and self-limiting patterns. They are open to facing the issues that hinder them head-on, confident that they have much value to contribute in Christ and desiring to do so for the benefit of the world around them.

Most of us have been told we have potential, but few have had the opportunity to seek out that potential in an environment where we are recognized and believed in-especially when we doubt it ourselves. A good Christian life coach can serve as your guide, advisor, mentor, supporter, sounding board, and accountability partner to point you toward Jesus. Successful Christian life coaching can help you do what God created you to do, and go where He wants you to go.
